Today , we're doing a few small things for our journal. We create a super simple bookmark from leftover cover fabric. Then we decorate the doily we're using as a page in the book. We also create large tuck spaces from leaves.
I mentioned my husband's knitting. He did a lot of custom work on vintage machines. Here's a video we did where he introduces his Grosser machine, a hand-operated vintage knitting machine from the 1890s. The video was made for a customer's social studies class.

I cook with onions, and we all know that when you’re getting ready to chop your onion, you cut the ends off. You cut off the top, and you cut off the back end. Now, on that back end where the roots are, you’ve got just a little bit of a scab. Here’s the tip: You can actually plant this, and it will grow again. You take the scab of the onion, put it in some dirt, and just leave it there. I’ve been doing this for the past couple of weeks. Look, you can see that some have already sprouted. Now, this is not going to make a whole new onion bulb, but rather some beautiful shallots. You can chop them up and put them into soups and salads. They have that nice onion taste. Another really great thing about this is that they’ll become onion plants that sprout those big, beautiful onion flowers. It’s just a beautiful, decorative flower and showcase. This is a green that’s going to grow all through the winter. The time to do this is going to be now. It’s moist, and we’re in a cool season. That’s when onions like to grow.There’s the tip for you. In addition to the items I mentioned that you'll want for binding your journal, I forgot to mention binder clips, which you can get at the Dollar Tree or WalMart. Get the large ones!!! We will be binding in a couple more videos. For this step (not today, but in a couple days), you need:

One of the easiest and most useful things to add to your journal is a Rita Donnelly flip. In addition to those, we make one of the pockets from the digikit. We're going to put a small lace belly band on a pocket for our journal. Then, we'll put our pockets into our journal. Some will be top loading; others will load from the side.You can glue everything instead of sewing. You don't need to have a sewing machine to do great junk journals!
Remember to have a box or tub to keep your scraps in! There are so many ways to use them!

We're going to create a few very, very simple pockets in this video. (I'm sorry about the vertical orientation again. Still trying to figure out how to avoid that. It looked horizontal when I was filming.)The pages I reduced and recolored for this are from the kit. They are the rose page, which is the 16th page in the kit, and the 19th page which is an ecodyed page (looks kind of like marble). I used GoogleDocs to reduce and recolor. If you don't want to do that, you could always just cut up one of the pages to make pockets.

CRAFT WITH ME/TUTORIAL: Making a large pocket for my Floriculture journal (MelodiMade digikit part 3
Making a large, floating pocket from book pages, adorned with lace and some of the trim from the digikit. I added beads, but the video cut off while I was doing it and I didn't realize it. I'll show you the finished pocket in the next video and explain what I was doing.

Let's talk about digital kits (digikits): What are they? How do I use them? I'll be taking you along with me for the next 30 videos, as I work on this journal, with step-by-step tutorials geared especially toward newbies.This kit is now available! I asked Melodi about how she made these pages. This is what she wrote: "The images are vintage botanical drawings. The background is ecodyed paper, I grabbed foliage on my beach retreat and came home and boiled it with the paper then dried it, scanned it in and voila!It’s awesome because it’s unique💗" I agree!!
What's a design team (DT)? That's just a group of people who have been given a work by an artist and asked to "do their thing" with it, to help others imagine how they might be able to use it. It's always fun and inspiring to look at the various design team videos. You can see how one kit can be used completely differently by various people and each person adds their own personality to it, along with items from their already existing stash.
I'm working on a separate series for new junk journalers, and will show you in that series how I gather extra images from various places, work on these things on Canva, make easier changes on GoogleDocs, etc. This will be a separate series sometimes later. If you have particular questions about anything about junk journal creating, please feel free to write those below. That will give me time to plan for those questions in that series ... and get answers if I don't know.

I'm just using a bunch of coffee-dyed pages. You can use pages you've printed or scrapbook paper ... or even junk mail that you've painted some gesso over. Easy peasy!
