Hurricane Ian is bearing down on the west coast of Florida and is expected to make landfall as a Category 3 or 4 storm.
Tropical storm-force winds were expected across the southern peninsula late Tuesday, reaching hurricane-force Wednesday — when the hurricane's eye was predicted to make landfall. With tropical storm-force winds extending 140 miles (225 kilometers) from Ian’s center, damage was expected across a wide area of Florida.
It was not yet clear precisely where Ian would crash ashore. Its exact track could determine how severe the storm surge is for Tampa Bay, said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy. Landfall south of the bay could make the impact “much less bad,” McNoldy said.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis urged people to prepare for extended power outages, and to get out of the storm's potential path.
“It is a big storm, it is going to kick up a lot of water as it comes in," DeSantis told a news conference in Sarasota, a coastal city of 57,000 that could be hit. "And you’re going to end up with really significant storm surge and you’re going to end up with really significant flood events. And this is the kind of storm surge that is life threatening.”
Ian’s forward movement was expected to slow over the Gulf, enabling the hurricane to grow wider and stronger. The hurricane warning expanded Tuesday to cover roughly 220 miles (350 kilometers) of Florida's west coast. The area includes Fort Myers as well as Tampa and St. Petersburg, which could get their first direct hit by a major hurricane since 1921.
Forecasters said the surge of ocean water could reach 10 feet (3 meters) if it peaks at high tide. Rainfall near the area of landfall could top 16 inches (41 centimeters).
“It’s a monster and then there’s the confusion of the path,” said Renee Correa, who headed inland to Orlando from the Tampa area with her daughter and Chihuahua. “Tampa has been lucky for 100 years, but it’s a little scary now.”

In the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now.” That prediction turned out to be very wrong, and in this interview American Enterprise Institute scholar Nicholas Eberstadt tells how we are in fact heading toward the opposite problem: not enough people. For decades now, many countries have been unable to sustain a #population replacement birth rate, including in Western Europe, South Korea, Japan, and, most ominously, China. The societal and social impacts of this phenomenon are vast. We discuss those with Eberstadt as well as some strategies to avoid them.

There are a lot of reasons a routine would really help. For one thing, it's very hard for me to think these days and even the smallest decisions are almost impossible. Also, I now have to do all the things I did AND all the things Bill did, so I need to figure out how to make that possible along with work and building my business which I need for ministry and my future. In addition to that, I no longer have Bill caring for me, so I need to be intentional about taking care of myself or I won't have as much to give others.One of the things I'm doing is trying to fix my craft room so my animals can be back there with me. It's hard to give up the room where I can breathe freely (I'm technically a little allergic), but they need me. (It will make it look a lot more organized, too.)There's so much that has to be done before I can even begin to figure out a routine.I also talk a little about financial challenges here. I have a lot of peace about this, even though there are still many unknowns. In the interest of transparency ... at 4-1/2 weeks, I am not honestly feeling as hopeful. I think the shock has worn off and I'm dealing more with grief. I still have hope, but I'm exhausted and hurting and sad.
